Describe Behaviour, Not Diagnosis
The most useful thing a homeowner can offer a technician is an accurate description of what the door does, at which point in its travel, and how that changed over time. A caller who says the motor is broken has already thrown away information. A caller who says the door rises about a foot, stops, and rolls back down has given away almost the whole diagnosis.
Where in the Travel Does It Happen
Position matters more than almost anything else. A noise or a bind that happens at the same height every cycle points at something fixed: a bent section of track, a bad roller passing a particular joint, a hinge that has opened up. A problem that happens anywhere and at random points at the opener, the remote, the power supply or the safety sensors. That one distinction separates hardware faults from control faults before anyone opens a toolbox.
Does It Behave Differently by Hand
With the opener disconnected at the emergency release and the door closed, lift it manually. A balanced door should take a firm but reasonable pull, then more or less stay where you leave it at waist height and again at shoulder height. If it slams down, the springs are weak. If it climbs on its own, they are overwound. If it is heavy and grinding all the way, the problem is in the rolling gear rather than the motor. If it moves beautifully by hand and badly under power, the door is fine and the opener is the suspect.
Sound Is a Category, Not Just a Volume
Different noises mean different families of fault. A rhythmic squeak that speeds up with the door is a rotating part, usually a roller or a pulley. A single sharp bang is normally a spring or a section of track releasing tension. A grinding rattle across the whole travel is often loose hardware, since every hinge and bracket on a door spends its life being shaken. A humming motor that does not move the door is a drive or capacitor issue, not a door issue.
What Changed Recently
Doors rarely turn bad for no reason, and coastal Orange County adds its own. Salt air accelerates corrosion on cables, springs and bearings, and a garage that sits under a marine layer most mornings will age hardware faster than one a few miles inland. A door that has been fine for years and deteriorated in a fortnight has usually had something happen to it: a vehicle nudge, a settled slab, a newly installed opener, or the first cold snap tightening everything up.
Photograph the Labels
Springs, openers and door sections all carry identifying marks. The spring end usually has a colour code or a stamped part number, the opener has a model plate on the back of the power head, and the door has a manufacturer sticker inside a rail or on a bottom section. Photographs of those save a return trip, because they let the right part travel on the van the first time.
What Not to Do While You Wait
Two parts on a residential door hold enough stored energy to injure someone seriously: the torsion spring above the opening and the lift cables either side. Neither is a homeowner job, and neither is a reason to keep operating the door. If a cable is loose or a spring has visibly separated, stop using the opener entirely and leave the door down. Running a door on one working spring is how a manageable repair becomes a bent track and a replaced panel.

Three sentences is enough. What it does, where in the travel, and what is different by hand. That is the whole intake, and it moves a service call from an open ended investigation to a targeted one.
